A serial rapist is on the attack

There’s a serial rapist on the loose in Yoakum, TX and Cassandra McGinty has a new sequence when she arrives home: search room to room, with a stun gun in her hand.

The rapist has been attacking older women in central Texas during the past year, terrifying residents and frustrating the police who don’t have a good description to go on.

Pepper spray has been selling like hotcakes in the towns where the attacks have occurred, and McGinty said her landlord in Marquez handed out stunguns as Christmas gifts.Stun guns can save your life.

Beginning with the rape of a 65-year-old woman in Yoakum in January 2009, authorities have linked eight sexual assaults or attempted sexual assaults to the suspect.

Does Surveillance Cameras Infringe on Our Privacy Rights

Everywhere I go I see surveillance cameras. Will we soon be living in a society that will be governed by surveillance cameras?Would a couple have sex in the park if they knew that they were being watched by a spy camera?I think the couple would change locations, but they would be looking into another surveillance camera. So people are saying that surveillance cameras are infringing on thier privacy rights. However surveillance cameras will keep people honest and safe.

Can Burglar Alarms Save Your Life

Alarm systems definitely have a place in a home security plan and are effective, if used properly. The reason why alarms systems deter burglaries is because they increase the potential and fear of being caught and arrested by the police. The deterrent value comes from the alarm company lawn sign and from the alarm decals on the windows. Home and apartment burglars will usually bypass a property with visible alarm signs and will go to another property without such a sign. Some people, with alarm systems, feel that these signs and decals are unsightly and will not display them. The risk here is that an uninformed burglar might break a window or door and grab a few quick items before the police can respond. Also, don’t write your alarm passcode on or near the alarm keypad.

Are Surveillance Cameras any Good?

I read an article that stated that surveillance cameras are not good deterrents for criminals.I can personally attest to the effectiveness of surveillance cameras.About two weeks ago I was driving along highway 6 in Houston,TX. I did know that I was on a highway that led to a toll booth,so I rode on until I approached the toll booth,I drove past the toll booth without paying the toll.I spotted a menacing looking camera staring at me,I backed up to pay the toll, but the toll machine did not accept debit cards.Well I drove on,but I was worried all day about the incident.I finally went to the DMV to take care of the matter. As an ex-thug I can say that yes surveillance cameras can deter crime.

Hidden cameras

A hidden camera is a very good peice of surveillance equipment.

How to avoid a carjacking

Carjacking: Avoid Becoming a Victim

Carjackers are some of the most violent criminals around today. Instead of stealing parked cars, these criminals are paid more money to steal yours while you are still in it. Even if you voluntarily give up your vehicle, the situation could turn ugly. Take a few precautions to keep yourself from being the next target.

Carjacking has something in common with other crimes – criminals look for easy prey. Men and women are both victims of carjacking. Gender is not necessarily the issue, but instead it’s all about body language. As long as the victim has a gun, they aren’t even scared of male drivers. Here are six precautions everyone should know and take to avoid being easy prey for carjackers.

1. Know Your Surroundings – This point can’t be stressed enough. In this world today, you don’t know who may be watching you. With carjackers, they are always looking for victims who aren’t paying attention. When you go to the mall, avoid parking next to vans with sliding doors or parking in parking decks. Keep your doors locked at all times when you are in the car. As you exit the car, do so quickly without fumbling for keys or talking on the cell phone.

2. Keep Your Arms Free – Carjackers look for people carrying many bags on their arms or talking on the cell phone. Both will distract you from seeing if someone is following you or waiting by your car. When you approach your car have your keys in hand. Actually, place your key between your fingers with the end of the key pointing out. This is a defensive action that MIGHT deter a criminal but don’t count on it to be a sure bet. Walk tall and look all around as you approach your car.

3. Don’t Be a Hero – If you are approached by one or more people and they ask for your keys, drop them on the ground and run away. A car is just property and not worth your life.

4. Stay in Well Lit Areas – Like all criminals, carjackers operate best in the dark or in isolated areas where no one is about. Avoid dimly lit streets at night. Stay in places where there is a crowd of people. When walking back to your car, wait to continue any conversations until you are safely in the car. Talking to friends can create enough of a distraction for an attack to take place.

5. Keep Your Distance – Many carjackers attack at stop lights. Make sure you keep plenty of distance between you and the car in front of or behind you at traffic lights. If you are too close to the car in front of you, it will be hard to maneuver to get away. Also, some carjackers use their car to block you in and then jump out and steal your car. Stay at least a car length away from another car.

6. Drive Away Right Away – When you get into your car, don’t dawdle. Lock the door as soon as you get in and start the car. It helps to back into parking spaces so you can make a quick escape if needed. Backing out of a space slows you down and can give a carjacker time to approach you.

Carjackers don’t discriminate. Anyone could be a victim. Use these above tips to avoid being their next victim.

5 ways to survive a home invasion

5 Ways to Survive a Home Invasion

Having your home burglarized is a scary thought. Even worse than that is becoming the victim of a home invasion. If you are ever in this situation, here are some tips that will hopefully bring a more favorable outcome.

First of all, remember that things in real life are not like the movies. If you’ve ever seen a movie involving home invasions, making bombs out of lard and baking powder isn’t something you’ll have time or know how to do. Invaders won’t come in with machine guns or grenades but they will be intimidating to you and your family.

1. Have a home invasion plan. We all have a fire escape plan for our families. A home invasion plan is similar to that. Have a way of escape for each room in the house in case someone breaks in. use a code word that anyone can shout to trigger your mass exodus from the house. Practice it with everyone there and when there are only a few of you in the home.

2. Try not to panic. In these situations, the adrenaline starts pumping through your system triggering the fight-or-flight response. Remaining calm is easier said than done, but keep your mind thinking at all times. Practicing your home invasion plan will help with staying calm. If you are not in the direct line of the invaders, escape from the house if you can or find a secure location to call the police.

3. Your family is more important than property. This goes without saying, but some people will try to make a stand on principle or to save their families. Know this: Home invaders are there to take what you have and harm you if necessary. Some will harm you anyway. You can never know for sure what such a criminal will do. Make every effort to get out as soon as possible and not confront them.

4. If you have a weapon in the house, know how to use it. More often than not, home owners have been injured or killed with their own weapons. Most home invaders will come armed. Any weapons for you to use work best when they are within reach. Don’t try to make it from the living room to the bedroom to get your gun if you can easily escape through a window or door. Keep bats, tasers, etcetera in concealed places where any family member can find them if the opportunity arises for them to use it. And, practice with them (not on each other) so you know how to defend yourself with them if you need to.

5. Use your security system. Most people have one because it lowers their home insurance premiums but it is more effective as a deterrent. Arm your system when you are home as well as when you are not. Utilize motion sensors on floodlights and timers on lights when you are away from home. Be sure that you choose an alarm company with 24-hour monitoring and you test the system periodically to make sure it works properly.

Home invasions are very real. Hopefully you will never become a victim, but knowing how to handle one can save your life.
